All sessions are being offered virtually at this time due to COVID-19.

As Certified Tele-Mental Health Providers, we offer HIPAA-compliant video sessions (also referred to as online counseling, tele-health, and distance counseling) for local clients during the COVID emergency. We are NOT typically a distance counseling practice and look forward to resuming in-person  work.

frequently asked questions

Is distance counseling appropriate for all clients?

Clients need to be relatively stable with their mood and able to contract for safety. Clients must be able to tolerate the risk of trying something new with technology and video sessions. Clients must be physically located in North Carolina. If clients will be temporarily out of state, give us advance notice - we will advocate in the state you will be in for permission to provide emergency treatment.

What technology is required?

Clients can access sessions with smart phones, tablets/iPads, laptops, or computers. We have been using video conferencing for several years and promise - its user-friendly! Sessions are provided through HIPAA compliant, approved telemedicine video platforms (not Skype or FaceTime).

Where should I be for our distance therapy sessions?

  • Client and Clinician must be in North Carolina for sessions. Our clinicians may be in their work or home office for client sessions.

  • Reliable internet connection is a must. If you know your internet is spotty in some rooms, we need your help to figure out the best spot in your home.

  • Confidentiality must be maintained. You will be asked to verify that  no one else is present during sessions. Just like an office visit, infants  < 1 are welcome to be in the room during our sessions.

  • We need to be able to ‘see each other.’  Appropriate lighting and angle of your camera matter.  Clients must dress appropriately - same requirements as face to face sessions.  Please get comfortable and sit in a chair/sofa as you would face-to-face. Your hands need to be free- holding an iPhone or iPad is not a comfortable position for 1 hr.

  • Clients may NOT participate from their vehicle if it is moving. You are welcome to participate in your car- provided that it is parked. We will hang up immediately if your vehicle is moving.

  • How do I pay for distance counseling? Will insurance cover sessions?

  • Benefits with insurance companies have expanded to include ‘tele-therapy’ as a covered benefit for most plans. Clients are encouraged  to call to confirm benefits. To confirm, make sure you ask about behavioral health benefits - not the same as medical coverage- for “tele-therapy with synchronous video and audio from a HIPAA compliant server.”  This is not the same as telephone sessions!
